Posting this mostly for record-keeping purposes as I feel like I've finally solidified what my 10 fav albums are. Feel free to post your own or comment on mine. In no particular order (except that In the Aeroplane Over the See is far and away my #1 album...and it should be yours to...go buy this album damnit!!!)

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island
Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
Radiohead - Kid A
Sigur Ros - ()
The Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - self-titled
The Decemberists - Castaways & Cutouts

One self-observation - 6 out of those 10 are post-2000 albums. They're all within the last 15. I tend to get defensive when people say they don't make good music anymore.

What style of music is it?

And what constitutes an album? For instance, would the LOTR scores be considered albums?

OK, let's see what I come with. :D I don't have a number one by the way. I like all of my favorites about the same.

Pink Floyd-The Dark Side of the Moon
Queen-A Night at the Opera
Radiohead-The Bends
Pink Floyd-The Wall
Led Zeppelin-Album IV
The Smiths-The Queen is Dead
Depeche Mode-Black Celebration
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here
The Smiths-Meat is Murder
Sarah McLachlan-Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

Great idea for a topic, yov! :D

Is "genius" a style? ;)
Ummm...it's...well...it'd be considered a rock album...you know, guitar and drums and all that. But it alternates between songs filled with big fuzzy rock guitars and horns and strings (and a bagpipe!!), and really intimate guitar+singer songs. An enormous amount of the album's enjoyment comes from how much you enjoy his rough, unusual voice and his strange, surreal lyrics. If you're curious, I'll try to find a link or something.

I think scores are called scores. :) Could be wrong. Albums would perhaps be a collection of original recordings? I don't think a score wouldn't count because it wasn't originally written for a CD (or whatever) format. That's probably a bad definition though as I just made it up.

That's a good list, Sid! Go Radiohead! :D Even though I personally despise Morresey, The Smiths are still a respectable band, as I know lots of people with deep, informed tastes who love them. :)

Okay, that was way too hard. :P And my list is definitely subject to change...I listen to new stuff too often.

1. Tori Amos – from the choirgirl hotel
2. Snow Patrol – Final Straw
3. My Brightest Diamond – Bring Me the Workhorse
4. Sarah Slean – Nightbugs
5. The Dresden Dolls – Yes, Virginia...
6. Vienna Teng – Warm Strangers
7. Damien Rice – O
8. Kate Havnevik – Melankton
9. Sigur Ros – Takk...
10. Frou Frou – Details

yov, you don't even want to know how far down on my list poor Neutral Milk Hotel would end up...;)

I was wondering if/which Sigur Ros might end up on your list. :)

It had to be Takk...I like () well enough, but it's something I have to be in the mood for...otherwise it just blends together and kind of puts me to sleep. And Agetis Byrjun has some beautiful high moments, but I don't like it as well overall as Takk.

Maybe...

If you put another one in front of that eleven...sorry...

Yeah, Takk was close to being an all-time great but after a while I find it has too many lulled moments for me (eg. does anything happen in track 5??). Still awesome though. :)

Well at least you know what the hell yov is talking about, El. I look at his list and draw a blank. I've heard nothing by any of those bands except Radiohead and the one song by the Flaming Lips that is in the Sims2...which really quite grew on me by the way! It's one of my favorites on there now.

By the way yov, by looking at my top list which band on your list do you think I would like the most (besides Radiohead)?

Ooh, good question, Sid...I'd recommend The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Definately. I really think you'd enjoy it.

eta - go El! :D Here's a video off of Yoshimi for you, Sid (I don't think it's the official vid  but you can hear the song).

eta2 - and here's a second vid off that album:

Well Sid, I actually have three of yov's top albums, so. ;) He and I are on the same indie track.

And I know you didn't ask me, but I'd say you'd enjoy Flaming Lips the most...Yoshimi is a really great album. (edit: Ha! We agree...now you have to get this one. ;) )

And okay, you might enjoy Neutral Milk Hotel if you don't mind an incredibly...droning voice, which is what keeps me from liking it overly much. :P

This might change slightly but I think I can safely say that they are:

Alexisonfire - Chaos
Led Zepp - IV
Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon
AC/DC - Back in Black
Nirvana - Nevermind
Kashtin - Akua tuta
Our lady peace - Spiritual machines
Billy Talent
Billy Talent - II
Bon Jovi - These Days

Yov, I stuck to the suggested number this time. Happy? ;)

Though there are a couple more which might surplant one or two of the above.

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Bush - Sixteen Stone

And perhaps one of the oasis albums.

Any list that contains Bon Jovi and Arcade Fire would be declared null and void anyways.

It always amazes me how people with otherwise fairly traditional or mainstream tastes still manage to love an album with as many weird moments as Dark Side of the Moon.

Oi, what's wrong with Bon Jovi. That was really the first rock band I ever listened to. These days was a great album.

And dammit I forgot to include Guns N Roses - Appetite for destruction and Metallica's Reload. Oh well...

And your list only contains six artists. Where's the diversity?

What, my favorite artists happen to make my favorite albums. Is that strange? If NMH had made 10 albums my top 10 might be nothing but NMH.

I don't think anybody's list has been terribly diverse so far, really...predictably enough, we've all tended to stay within one or two genres of music. Mine's mostly electronica/piano-based, yov's is mostly indie rock, TWT's is mainstream/classic rock, as is Sid's.

Not shocking that one's favorite music tends to be at least somewhat similar. ;)

Accurate observation. I may add though that I started listening to Alexisonfire long before they were mainstream and were pure indie and couldn't get a song on the radio. Now their latest album debuted at #1 in Canada...

My favorite band of all time is Nirvana and my favorite songs by them are from their least known album, about the last five tracks.

Last year they were/kind of still are:

Switchfoot - Learning to Breathe
Skillet - Comatose (is this fair since I only have two songs from the album?)
Sanctus Real - Fight the Tide
SUGERCULT - Los Angeles (this was a single download from iTunes..)
Rob Thomas - Something to Be

I can't add more because most of my favorite songs came in singles or on mixes or downloaded as singles. So........I have a problem with albums right now.

If we were allowed to add scores I would add Final Fantasy VII Advent Children's soundtrack. It's awesome.
