NOTE: editorial rants shrunk for lack of importance in the wake of actual nominations coming out. ;)

Just reserving a spot for the announcements tomorrow. They're still about twelve hours away, so hopefully I will be able to get up in time. :P

On a personal note, there are a lot of movie-related things I have been meaning to discuss this month, but the organization has been mucked all up. I was supposed to visit my dad two weeks ago but he said last week would be better, and then storms cut that trip short anyway, and now my mom is saying the two of us will visit in a couple of days. Never knowing where I'll be or for how long has made it hard to commit to some things, or continue working on them from dad's apartment. :scared: And for those who post on Livejournal, well, reminding myself to take and post pictures every day has gotten in the way of movie reviews. I'll get this all in order soon, it's just been a strange month.

Anyway, I'm rather cynical about this year's awards (more than other years) because after trying so hard to see almost every movie that played near me, maybe a dozen have a chance at being nominated. Of those, five have any sort of shot at a major category. Living outside of New York, L.A., and Chicago gives you NO EFFING CLUE as to what voters like because it's all movies that were released in the fall... limited. It's retarded. These are truly Hollywood's movies because they're not for the public at large. I really loved Meryl Streep's acceptance speech at the Globes last week when she mentioned how people could like her movie, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, as it was shoved down our throats, whereas smaller movies, most people aren't gonna hear about until critics nominate them. Damn straight, girl! I saw 81 goddamned movies and they were mostly crap big-budgeted ones. The ones I went out of town for, like LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, UNITED 93, and HOLLYWOODLAND, were fabulous. I got to see THE QUEEN last night, at the local place, for reasons I don't understand but I'm sure glad they played it at all because it was really good. Living in a small market is rough when you want to support the films you know are wonderful. It's hard out here for a pimp.

I don't do predictions until after nominations are out, and will continue that trend because the exact same people are being nominated everywhere so there's no point in guessing. But for those who haven't been following, you'll see a lot of BABEL, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, DREAMGIRLS, and THE DEPARTED showing up, along with individuals like Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Peter O'Toole, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, maybe Nicholson, and other boring people who get nominated just for showing up. Sorry, it's like the same people all the time, I feel bad for the new talents who go unrecognized. :P But you'll see some of them, too. Jennifer Hudson is a lock, Emily Blunt may show up, Forest Whitaker, Leo, Borat, Brad... we'll see. I'm pulling for Abigail Breslin from LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, and at least she's getting some love from the Screen Actors Guild, but so did Dakota Fanning a few years ago, and she never got the Oscar nod after that, so I don't think Breslin's chances are that great. But she deserves it. And is probably less likely to get preggers at 16 like the last young actress they gave a nod to.

Okay, so a lot of my opinions need their own thread. :P I will do that in the morning, so hang on tight. Please.

I always felt bad that I didn't letcha know when I first saw it because while I liked it, there were a few things I wasn't sure of and didn't want to fawn over something I might not like the second time around. :P But I purchased the DVD on a whim and now have no doubt it's one of the best of this year. Just hilarious.

Glad I saw it before I knew how audiences received it, though. A lot of criticisms revolve around it not being as good as they were lead to believe. I can understand that feeling (in general, not with this movie specifically or anything), but still, give me a break. Anyway, this was probably the only time I got to see an indie film before it got big and started taking in awards - they can be hard to live up to. I'm just glad to have gotten an unbiased view of it.

EDIT: an unforseen glitch: no one's broadcasting the nominations this year!!!! At least that I can see. I've taken mornings off school every year for almost a decade doing this and now I can't even find an internet broadcast for it. This is disappointing to say the least. I hope news reports are quickly released so I can update the thread before everyone else knows who's nominated. :(

I can see why some people wouldn't think it that great. Some of the bits, especially the end, get really absurd in a sitcom-y sort of way. Still, the characters feel so authentic that it totally works for me. I'd love to see Olive get a nom, and I swoon for Steve Carell.

Agreed. Once they were Weekend at Bernie-ying a body around, I thought wow, this is something the Simpsons would do, not so much a family who's relatively normal in it's dysfunctionality. No big deal. It was damn funny, so I forgive it. :D

From his first second on screen, Carrell deserved an Oscar. I'll never forget the look on his face. It made the film for me.

EDIT: oh, thank god. They're airing it on Good Morning America, for anyone who's interested. Whew! Was really worried there for a bit. :(

I looked at the list and realized that I haven't seen a single one of these movies. And neither do I care. I am so sick of over-budgeted, over-hyped movies that always, without a doubt, leave a lot to be desired.

Brits have done well...

The Queen is up for 6 noms, and Mirren and Dench are both up for actress.

Delighted to see Pans Labyrinth got 6 also.

Yeah, that was a bit of my rant there last night. I don't agree with the over-budgeted part, though. Yes, big movies get the technical awards, but that's expected and it really doesn't help with box office or anything. Like, no one's gonna rent something because Adam Sandler was in old age make-up. They'll rent it because they're an idiot who likes Adam Sandler movies, if anything. :P

If it's the original part you're :scratch:ing at, you don't know the half of it! Most of the dialogue in GOSFORD PARK was ad-libbed, yet it won for original screenplay. And after VERA DRAKE got nominated, Mike Leigh actually had to prepare a screenplay for voters to read because one was never written - actors just rehearsed for several months in advance and worked out their characters that way. Nuts, huh?

As does everyone in the world. And this year, I don't think he has any competition strong enough to overcome how desperately the Academy wants to give it to him.

All nominations are up now. I'm gonna work on listing them by film next. And a poll is up!

Alatar, they're in the first post. But I can't add a fifth option for the poll. This happened last year. Help?

You can't add after the fact. Best bet is to start a new thread and lock this one!

Children of Men was awesome, well it was an awesomely shot movie at least. The premise was fucking ridiculous and many things were great to leave you with that lovely "WTF??" feeling. But there was suspense and drama and all of that stuff a good film should have.

And i havent seen anyone of the Best Motion Picture Nominee's....as normal...just like the normal person.

And Meryl Streep? HAHAHAHAHA. That she is up there for that fucking movie is a joke, period. In no way should anyone from that movie nor anything from that movie be considered for a nomination.

I think once anyone has voted you can't add an option.

I've cried a thousand oceans, and I would cry a thousand more if that's what it takes to sail you home.

Someone was voting while I was adding the poll? That makes no sense. I was adding in options before the edit was even finalized, so there would have been nothing for people to vote for. The fifth nomination never showed up once and now that people are voting, I can't edit any more? That's ridiculous. Is there any way to delete the poll and start again? I'm sure it will take no effort for yov and I to vote LMS again. :P

Leonardo DiCaprio - BLOOD DIAMOND
He was good in this but he was far better in Departed.

Abigail Breslin - LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
Is that the girl or the mom?

BORAT
What????? Adapted??? From what?? I just find it weird that a movie that's so much improv can even considered to have a screenplay at all. I mean, what screenplay there is probably just says "talk to some frat guys" or "go to a rodeo".

The girl. Toni Collette is the mom.

Yep. CARS freaking stank. Boring as hell, but lovely to look at. Pixar joins the ranks of people like Meryl Streep and Judi Dench who the Academy can't stop fellating.

Absolutely. I am so damn happy to see CoM get fairly big nominations for a film that isn't up for any of the top awards. I was screaming like mad for those. :D

I know. :bawl: I've been following it for most of the year and want to see it so badly. Argh, I hope it comes to video soon.

I talked about that in this post, though I mistakenly thought it was up for Original. Adapted, though, would come from the fact that the Borat character is from a tv show. It's nothing to do with the material in the final film.
