Agree to that, I do :D

Actually tried to teach myself a bit of that, and pretty much managed. If you know English and German, Dutch comes pretty much at a certain ease. With the exception of the pronunciation, which might be a bit harsh at the beginning.

Hey Jude! Ecuador was super! I just got back a few hours ago and I miss it already. I didn't get to use Quechua though I think Maria was impressed when I told her I was all set with a few phrases. :( We were down on the coast and since that area only traded with the Inca Empire (which, incidentally, is tied into what we were researching) and not conquered by it, they only speak Spanish, which was interesting enough as it was. And how've you been?
Did Maria get to use her Quechua? I've read that the Incas are slightly distrustful of people using their language, and prefer to use Spanish with strangers. I have no idea whether that's true or not.

Oh look! Puppies!

Puppies! Awww.

No, Maria speaks Spanish with them and I may have been wrong about her speaking Quechua, though it seems like something she'd know. That's interesting about the Inca. Do you remember why they don't speak it with strangers? The people in my village weren't Inca at all, actually, as the Inca were never able to conquer that part of Ecuador. I'm not sure what their descent is, though now that you mention it I'll have to ask her. This isn't osgiliating the thread too much, is it?

Since the topic of this thread is "post something in July", I very much doubt it. :)

How can you be osgiliating a thread whose sole purpose is to get people talking and posting? :D

I'll try to track down where I read that about the Incas. It was a long time ago...

Oh, good! I wouldn't want to be osgiliating a theme month just when we've finally got one again.

I love your sig, yov. :D

I couldn't find it in any of my books on Peru. I think it must have been something I read while browsing a book in a bookshop.

My books actually contradict it - they say that knowing Quechua will come in useful. And in fact there are about 2 million people in the more remote areas that don't speak anything but Quechual.

All the same, when I go I think I'll play it by ear and see how much rapport I have with someone before I start speaking Quechua to them.

Hi, Mossy!!

I know no languages except American English, and a bit of tired old Latin. When we start getting into the "lingua franca" of native Ecuadorans or "double dutch" I admit I get kerfluffed. :D

So, I want to be tossed off of the trebuchet into the pool, now, dangit!! Then after that refreshing cool off, I will be ready for BOTH a cocktail AND a donut.

:D

A cocktail and a doughnut? Nice, if that was the de rigeur around here I'd better pour myself a glass of Champers and open a bag of pork scratchings. ;)

Grabs the Watcher, chucks her over his shoulder, dashes over to the Trebuchet, plonks her in place, gets down, Yanks the Lever! :D

Phew!

Watches her arc over into the pool.
