I like the idea Areanor and Alandriel has. I would sure volunteer for that. A job, yes, but not too much of a job for me. We can make all the movers Admin, so they can edit the posts they move ( important to get the smiley codes! ) for copying. As the threads are being moved ( starting at the oldest ones, good idea ) they get locked. The non-movers will just have to put up with the inconvenience when we reach the newest threads, I think

It will probably mean some downtime at some stage, and maybe a day or so when no-one can post on either the old or the new board to make sure things are done cleanly.

I will obviously be MORE available on weekends than weekdays for this, but we can work out the details as and when we arrive at crunch time :)

Depending on when this move would be, I'd gladly help out. At the moment I can only make real promisses towards weekends though, to be available for such a job. The rest of my time falls under The Curse of the Codemaker - section b.1.0: Thou shalt have no life henceforth during the week. :P

I hate moving !!
Packing damned boxes and lugging them around.
Driving the boxes somewhere, then more lugging around and unpacking.
Is there really any threads here we couldn't do without? Excepting the stickies and RP threads of course. Is this all about postcount? I say leave the threads. Most of the threads.
Of course I'll end up going along with what the women want. I always do.

Nobody volunteered ya as a mover Holby - take it easy ;)

I personally don't have a problem leaving things behind when moving and only take the bear necessities - but I also know I'm not like many others.

So - you just sit back, buckle your seatbelt and enjoy a drink when and if we get to the moving stage.

And thanks for your offer Kaya.. I'm sure you'll live to regr.. erm... enjoy it  and same goes for Griff of course ;)

Wow! You guys are willing to copy and paste each post?

You guys rock!

Does that mean moving should happen sooner rather than later to lighten your load?

I very much prefer to do it sooner rather than later.

I can't help with the research because I don't know what you all are talking about with all the different programs and codes and such :scratch but I can help with the donkey work of cutting and pasting threads.

I'm off to buy a new fancy computer chair for my poor bum soon today but either later tonight or tomorrow I'll get cracking looking for stuff.

Steve,

If you are willing to buy the host stuff  would you mind giving out the password and stuff?

A lot of the initial setting up work needs to be done with access to the host's control panel.

Well, I have this friend. And she's like, this techno geek. And she has a messageboard. She uses v-bulletin. And I was like, hey, that kind of looks like php! And she's like, yeah, it's kind of like a Special Extended Edition of php. And I don't really have that much of a clue, but I believe she told me that they'll let you transfer your free php board to the new v-bulletin thing once you've purchased the software. If I understood her correctly.

Could someone of you Techies please check that? :D

vB is awesome software.

It just costs $160.

We still couldn't move the data here because without a backup we have no real access to it.

Well, seems you got what I meant.

Yes, it would mean giving the movers some admin functionality for the task. As Griff said, it's the easiest way to get the smileys and links with us.

And starting with the oldest threads would give us some practise...

Squiddy, what Farawen said.. I wonder how her friend could move her free php-board? If I understood you correctly, a free php-board won't ever have a backup??????

And the sooner we move the lighter the load and the more unlikely the chance for a big bam boom for this board without a back-up.

I don't think I've actually posted in this thread; though I have been faithfully reading, I just don't have the knowledge to contribute much.

However, I acknowledge that we're going to have to move, if we want this community to have a long-term future, and so we may as well get on with doing it. Which is what you guys are doing anyway, so I may as well go away again. ;)

Alandriel - if you need a hand moving Seekers, as and when, then let me know. I don't think there's much else I would want to take. Except for relevant stickies I suppose.

In the interim it might be quite nice (assuming that there's collective time and energy to spare) if we'd sorted as much of the governance/dealing with trouble issues as possible, so we have a fresh clean start knowing what we're doing when we do go.

Yeah! And then we could just copy a summary of the discussions, instead of every voting/talking/debating thread...right? If anything needs to be changed later, let it be a fresh start.

Ever so sensible  Yep! Sorting out most of what needs sorting out is definitely a grand idea!!!!

And thanks for your offer of help Leoba. I think you'll just end up being the designated Seekers mover once the time comes around =:)
;)

You posting here Rodia I take this you'll volunteer too ;)

:Q

Is this like the time when we all stand in a row and the person in charge asks for volunteers to step forward and everyone but me takes a step back?

:P

Kidding. Of course I'll help. :)

I'm a little unsure which way to jump.

Did you want me to look in to other alternatives other than phpBB?

Did you want me to find a host?

My geekness is at your demand but I'm a bit confused what people want me to do right now.

I'm a techno disaster, but I volounteer.

I'm ready to pay too.

Maybe we could limit the number of threads to move? Only those which are still more or less active and have reached at least two pages?

Now Squiddy's feeling like an admin! =:) :P Wanting to do stuff, but not sure what to do. :scratch I think we're still at the researching phase right now Squiddy. If I was more of a techie, I'd help you out, but I'd hinder more than help you.

Squiddy, the more you can find out the better. I suspect that most of us are going to have to trust the judgement of a handful of techies. So I doubt anyone would complain about you finding out whatever you have the time and inclination to.

We really need to get this rolling. The phpbber admin is stopping doing stuff like uploading smileys and styles so he can concentrate on uploading MODS.

We just don't have the control to make this place what we want it. We need to get our own space so we can do whatever the hell we want.

Ok, I think we should just stick with phpBB as a software choice.

It's the best FREE software out there.

It's stable, good w/ security and easily customized.

Do I hear an ok?

ok

ok

Just need to find that host today. I'll be back in a few hours.

Once I find a host I'll post it here. If no one objects I'll track down Steve. Steve can do his much appreciated magic credit card trick.

Is eveyone cool if I just set it up? I've done it before and it will only take me a half hour to set up the basic phpBB.

If everyone is cool with me doing that Steve can give me access to the host's control panel and FTP access.

Also if I had the password to the group yahoo mail that would be helpful.

I'm willing to do this but I need to make sure I have the groups ok.
