This probably just goes to show the level of my geekhood and the ease with which I can please myself, but every year since I got into film, I like to make up my own award nominations. I'll add everyone whom I thought was worthy of mentioning, whether they ever had a chance in hell of getting an Oscar nod or not. Sometimes I would use both the Oscar categories and the MTV Movie Award ones. Occassionally I would make up my own, just because I wanted to acknowledge my own favorites and not what everyone else generally liked. It really did make me feel better afterwards. I may just be one person, but dammit, some people need more recognition! Even if it only ends up being in my notebook.

So hey, what are your picks? Feel free to edit as you see more 2004 releases. I know I will be.

Jeez, you sure did like Hero, huh *E*. I saw it this past Saturday. Interesting film, but I think the part with the arrows was so unbelievable it totally threw me off the story. :P Also, I'm not all that interested in art fighting which was most of the movie. It was visually pleasing. The use of silks was nice, but then again, used too much maybe?

I'm sooo not a movie critic. I just can't do this. :P

I think I'd have to put it at the top of my all-time film list, Eru. :) Perhaps I like LOTR or THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION more, but HERO was flawless. I can't think of a single aspect (performances, directorial decisions, or out-of-place hair strands) that wasn't astonishingly gorgeous and well-done. Had a very strong reaction to it upon my first viewing, and have only grown to find more and more about it that registers with me.

The action scenes aren't supposed to be realistic. ;) Just pretty. But I totally feel you on any reservations you had about the gravity-defying fights because the few minutes of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON I saw were ridiculous. Until I see that one in full, I can't compare these two other than on things I learn about it in basic photo galleries and plot summaries, but if anything, HERO rocks my world for it's beautiful color palette. It was so purty. And the music really spoke to me as well, which doesn't happen much (especially in foreign scores because they are just so different from anything I've usually heard before).

Still got more categories to stick HERO into. I've had a busy day and there were other things to think about - like taking my family out to our local club, the Opera House, and then to see PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which just started playing at the cinema. *pats self on back* I did good today.

Silly billy - this involves no critiqueing, so don't worry about not being a movie critic. I sure am not. Just have aspirations to be. ;) But you should see my reviews - they're all about movies with titles like KILLER CONDOM, or JESUS CHRIST VAMPIRE HUNTER, and I simply take the piss out of them for a few paragraphs. I could never make it onto the printed page. :halo:

You know what? One thing I can say about trying to pinpoint what you did or didn't like about a movie is this: the more you watch, the more epiphanies you have. There are a lot of movies that I remember for having opened my eyes to some aspect of filmmaking and not that they were the best I'd ever seen, just something clicked when I watched them. For example - QUILLS was the first time that I realized period costumes could still be excellent even if the lower classes were more predominant in the film (obviously, costumes are more pleasing to the eye when you got the richest materials available). After that, I was much less harsh on what I deemed "ugly" costumes, and started to appreciate them for what they were, rather than why they weren't pretty enough for me. A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE was the first film that showed me black and white photography could be just as beautiful as color, and even add a lot to the story itself.

I still have a lot of trouble forming opinions on movies because the words just aren't there to describe what exactly I did or didn't like about it (and usually I'm just lukewarm - which is why I go for sarcasm cuz at least I can always keep that coming), but I think that the more you watch, the more you learn, and you start to see trends and learn what you like and what you find cliched and what you feel is irredeemable.

HERO had lots of silks so that the big ol' costumes would look great when the wind machine was turned on. See? I get what you mean. (Or maybe I don't, but still, don't say you're not a movie critic - everyone's a critic, remember?) ;)

Yeah, he was the guy that wouldn't let Peter in to see MJ's play, it was very close to the beginning.

Not as dynamic as his cameo in the first film, where he was the wrestling announcer (I think)... but it was a better fit for him I think.

*E*, I can't believe King Arthur is one of your top films and Phantom isn't. :Q I found King Arthur to be at best a very mediocre action film, and Troy, which we watched the week before, superior in every way.

It would be a bit pointless for me to do a list. I've not seen that many films this year and Phantom would totally dominate.

Lol! No, no, its there. I just haven't added it yet. ;) I really should get around to that before anyone panics. See, I was trying to add my picks by film first, and then I got distracted, and then I just started adding what came to mind as I got to each category.

Phantom is most DEFINITELY there. Were HERO not released in this year, it'd be my winner, no doubt. Just a preview (cuz I never really shared my feelings on the movie yet) - I was overwhelmed during most of it's running length, but I got a little punchy when Phantom or Christine weren't onscreen (no offense to the others, they just weren't as powerful as the leads). However, I was able to see it again on Wednesday and Thursday night, and now I love everything about it. The non-Phantom or Christine people are very funny or well-acted, so I wasn't shifting around during their scenes at all the last two times.

Phantom: #2 film of the year, not far behind HERO, and will only get better over time. :cheers

*breathes sigh of relief*

By the way, I really liked Hero too. Not quite as much as Crouching Tiger, but probably my 2nd fave film of this year behind Phantom. Now I just need to see House of Flying Daggers.
