To be honest, this thread is really making me miss Krispy Kreme.... or donuts of any sort. The last time I had a real donut was almost two years ago :(

Hey Estel, at least you're not allergic to them! I may never have one again! :bawl:

What in them are you allergic to? It's fairly common ingredients....

I might be able to come up with a fairly good substitution if you know what is in them that you can't have

Hmmm. Read that as kibbles and was thinking, how'd you find that out? :blackeye:

I have a book that tells me all the things I'm allergic to... The one thing all of the above have in common is that they contain gluten

Gluten Free Donuts:
Quote:
gluten free donuts:

1 Cup Rice Flour; ¾ Cup Amaranth Flour; ¼ Cup Tapioca Flour; 1 ½ Tsp Baking Powder; 1/3 Cup Confectioners Sugar; ¼ Tsp Baking Soda; 1 Tbl Nutmeg; 1 Tsp Xanthan Gum; Dash of Cinnamon; 2 Eggs; 1 Cup buttermilk; 4 Tbl Olive Oil.
I mix all of the dry ingredients together first. Then in a separate bowl, I mix the Eggs, Buttermilk and Olive oil together. I then add the liquid into the dry and mix together. When mixed, the dough will be pretty gooey. This is important. Makes it a little difficult to work with…but… Now if you must, you can maybe add one or two tablespoons of rice flour, but remember, it needs to be pretty gooey. I divide the dough in half. Dust a cutting board with a bit of rice flour. Coat your hands with rice flour, as well as the rolling pin. I put the dough on the cutting board, coat the top with just a bit of rice flour and then roll it out. Rather amazingly, it did not stick to either the rolling pin or cutting board when prepared like this. Cut out the donuts with a cutter and put them in the bin for a deep fat fryer and fry at 375 degrees. It takes about 2 minutes per side. Just keep going until you run out. I didn’t actually count the donuts, but it looks like I got about 2 dozen donuts and donut holes…When they are fresh, they were pretty good. After a day, they are OK but a little heavier in texture. Still, the best gluten free donuts I have made to date.
or

Gluten Free Jelly Donuts
Quote:
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups buttermilk
1/4 cup butter, melted
5 cups Rice Flour Mix (See Below)
1 cup sugar
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp salt
2 tsp xanthan gum
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 beaten egg, set aside
1/2 cup sugar, set aside in a bowl
Raspberry or strawberry jelly (seedless)

Beat 2 eggs, buttermilk, and melted butter in a large bowl with a whisk.

Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Fold slowly into the wet ingredients, mixing by hand with a wooden spoon. When the ingredients are mostly combined, use your hands to knead a few times to make sure the ingredients are fully incorporated.

Let the dough rest for 15 minutes. Sprinkle extra rice flour mix on your countertop or a large cutting board. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick. If dough is sticky, work in more rice flour blend.

Heat 2 inches of canola oil until very hot (375 degrees F).

Use a glass, biscuit cutter or jar with approximately 3-inch diameter to cut disks out of the dough. Place 1/2 teaspoon of jelly in the center of one disk. Brush the beaten egg you've set aside around the outer edge of the dough. Place a second disk of dough on top, and use your fingers to crimp the edges until they are sealed. Repeat until you've used up all the dough. Remaining dough scraps can be rolled into balls ("donut holes") and fried.

Carefully place donut in hot oil with a slotted spatula. Cook until very brown on one side. If necessary, turn the donut over and brown on the second side. Remove from oil and place on a plate lined with two layers of paper towel or brown paper. While warm, roll donut in the bowl of sugar to coat.

and lastly

Rice Flour Mix

3 cups white rice flour
3 cups brown rice flour
2 cups potato starch (not flour)
1 cup tapioca starch

Course, if you don't like cooking, you could always come to Gib - I'd make them for you if you did that :D

I even know where to get a really good Gluten free beer ;)

Alatar, If you got my point, I apologize for attempting to explain it further. My reference to SF being childish was for starting this thread at all. It serves little purpose but to annoy one group by inciting mockery from another. If there was any actual discussion to be had here, that would be a different story.

My objection to which you are replying, was to the implication that my objection to this thread was somehow childish. I do not see in any way how that could be. If someone would care to explain that, then perhaps I can understand the point of view better.

I just went onto Google dot com and typed in Gluten free donuts - those recipes came from a website for celiac disease. Apparently donuts are the holy grail though, for Gluten free needs - really difficult to find a good recipe. The two I posted are the only ones that had any positive comments or ratings of 3.5 stars or more out of five stars for about 20 recipes that I looked at for donuts.

As for the beer, there are a few that claim to be Gluten free:

From a company called "Green’s" in the United Kingdom

Discovery Beer
Pioneer Lager
Endeavour Double Dark Beer
Trailblazer Lager
Herald Ale
Pilgrim Cherry Beer

http://www.glutenfreebeers.co.uk/" target="_blank

or

http://www.hambletonales.co.uk/" target="_blank

or got to http://www.ale4home.co.uk/product_list.htm" target="_blank and order the Coeliac Selection, which is, apparently, really good.

and

http://www.glutenfreebeerfestival.com/" target="_blank

and if you want cider, apparently Dunkerton's Organic Cider is gluten free - linky

The beer I was talking about, however, is called New Grist - the first and only Gluten Free beer approved by the FDA in the US - apparently they've changed the formula though, and it's not as good.

Perhaps Dunkin Donuts can make hay while the sun shines. They should take advantage of this anger against their chief rival and adopt a slogan which is a clear and unmistabkable signal to the pro-life crowd to purchase their donuts at Dunkin Donuts.

"LIFE BEGINS AT CONFECTION"

The really amazing thing here is that people are actually taking offense and arguing about donuts. That pretty much says it all.

New rule- don't ever post anything that is so overly ridiculous as to not be taken seriously!

I got to have one Krispy Kreme in Reading last October. Unfortunately that's 45 minutes away. So no real donuts for me either.

I've never tasted the American kind of donut ever. Just the small traditional Norwegian ones, which are quite different.

I'm totally going to stop by Krispy Kreme on the way home today. I need a donut. :damnfunny:

Anyway, I'm really not seeing how reporting on something (even if it IS something stupid, or "anti-pro-lifers") can be seen as childish. Are we going to say that people who report on politicians are childish for saying something that might be taken negatively? :Q

Yesterday I was having some sort of massive sugar craving and this thread was driving me nuts. I wanted a donut, bad. But then I went home, made the inauguration cake I was planning to make Tuesday, ate a piece, and that was the end of the craving. So now this thread is having no effect on me whatsoever. :Wooper:
