Picture my quiet little university town.

The seafront.


The little station.


All the weird clubs and societies.


Last night, a street away from my flat, there was an attempted murder.

And then two guys had a fight in the street, and one threw the other through a shopfront window.
The shop above which I live.

I didn't hear a thing.

What the fuck, Aberystwyth?

That's almost as out there as when three people got murdered in Tregaron!

Also they found a body in a shallow grave in Llanbarden Fawr a fortnight ago.

I blame the students.

You'd be surprised at what you can miss, even when you think you're aware of your surroundings.

I can sympathize, though. Forgetting for a moment that my own quiet little town is famous for a serial killer who actually escaped from prison the year my family moved here, a few months ago, our next-door neighbors had their car stolen by some young 'uns who then engaged the police in a high-speed chase. I, too, heard nothing. Some neighborhood watch were are lol.

Aahh, that's nothin'. You want crazy crime? The big story here is the Amish people who refuse to hook up to the public sewer system. They want their outhouses, and they say freedom of religion gives them the right!! Today was their deadline to get rid of the outhouses or go to jail. Will they choose to shit legally?? We're all waiting anxiously to find out.

But really, Pips, your town is very cute.

Okay, seriously, what's wrong with outhouses? Why do the Amish need to connect to the sewer system?

The hell? Privies are perfectly hygenic when properly managed, and the outgoing waste makes excellent fertilizer. I'm 100% on the side of the Amish there. What makes your local government think they have the right to tell people that they have to use an expensive and harmful method whenever they go to the toilet?

I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised about the violence here. I mean, there's a weird dynamic - a quarter of the town's population are students, and a lot of them drink too much. It was just very weird for me to find out that it was so close, and two incidents on the same night. I live near the club district, but really...

Pippin4242, my nephew is going to Wales in May to take some college courses. I don't know what school he is going to, or really anything, but maybe at some point he and his friends could meet you guys for a coffee or something. He's a really nice young guy. He won't be there long, a few weeks, I guess.

Pips, it's funny how the ages and genders, etc. of a population can influence what crimes or behaviors take place there. When I was looking into moving out west, the town of Banff is 60% made up of people between the ages of 16 and 35, and is apparently the STD capital of the country or some equally shameful statistic.

Vison, Wales is a big place. Okay, not relatively, but I'm in a very isolated town. On the other hand, there aren't all that many universities here, as far as I know - so if he'll be in Aberystwyth at all, I'd be very happy to take him out for a coffee, or even a cup of tea.
