The AC is on. Fog is pouring in from the ocean through the Golden Gate. If you zoom, you can see the top of the bridge tower sticking out.

Dave :D

A slightly less drastic approach is to deploy a herd of goat or sheep to clear the underbrush. We hiked past an electric fence last week, but the goats weren't there.

Don't they use those orange chemicals? But yeah, you got to use water one way or the other. There's a big debate about prescribed burns. Some California ecosystems rely on fires, and the longer you suppress them, the worse it gets. On the other hand, fire departments get lauded and rewarded for figh...

This sounds familiar but I don't remember why. Grandma used single-use lids over rubber rings that you sealed with a hand-held gadget. I have such fond memories of her making jam. Picking cherries in the yard or buying plums by a bucket. Wasps going nuts behind the window net. Saucers of sweet foam,...

Not that I know. To start with, we don't have that much water.

Why does it have to be 5 days? We are back to normal-ish. Still about 10F warmer than the old normal, but the fog does roll in before sunset and hangs around until late morning. We call it our air conditioning. Central California had a huge storm with thunder and even heavy rain some places. Meanwhi...

Oh, that's good to know! I've never tried to pressure can. Grandma pickled every year - tomatoes and cucumbers, watermelon, sauerkraut, sometimes apples. I don't think she pressure canned, but that's also how I learned about exploding pickles. PS: meanwhile, husband is getting ready the next batch o...

End of June - early July used to be our second coldest time of year.

We hit 98F today.

One day of this is manageable even without the AC. The house gets cool at night and takes all morning to heat up. But if this weather hangs around and the house doesn't cool off, I'll be in trouble.

I mostly need a rack. I have a big enough pot, but I've been using rolled up foil instead of the rack. And I wouldn't mind a nice funnel. Using a ladle is workable but messy. :D But they also sell the pressure cooker kind that supposedly works better for pickling. I have a dream of getting enough cu...

I'm getting a decent crop of plums this year. As in, *we* are getting plums and not just jays and squirrels. My husband made jam yesterday. I canned it, although it's in the fridge now because I boiled the jars but didn't sterilize them after pouring jam. I'd like to get some equipment to simplify t...

I've only ever fished for gobies in the Black Sea. They barely need bait, silly greedy things. Real good fried. Also fished on a little river with a friend, some variety of roach (not the insect, the fish that the Witcher names his horse after). We brought lines, hooks, and sinkers, made floats out ...

Sounds fun! On a boat? What are you fishing for?

I am taking a long weekend and we are heading down the coast for a different patch of redwoods.

The Day without the Sunrise was in August, so end of July - early August. I think Southern California started earlier.

We have lots of crows around, so I read up about them. I'm starting to think we would do well to have crows in charge. Glad you all made it through the weather. I've seen some videos from the Midwest, it looks scary. And of course Yellowstone flooding is very bad. Here, the fires are starting. Just ...

Meanwhile, we are in the heatwave. Inland, past the hills, it's over 100. I am, thankfully, before the hills, where the cooler ocean air reaches, so it's only high 80s (about 30C). But this is June. My normal temperature used to be 65 around this time of year. We'd get maybe 3 days of 90s a year in ...

I didn't realize the solar power wouldn't be available in an emergency. Probably explains why it's not a major selling point.

In that case, it would only make sense for us if we got an EV. Maybe when the Subaru starts showing its age. It's 12, but with low mileage.

Al, is that the kind that feeds electricity back into the grid? Tell us everything! Woke up at 6 to check for texts from my son, who's in Iceland on vacation. His employer has "unlimited" vacation days and allows staff to work from literally anywhere, so now son is working out of his Reykj...

Yeah, a distributed grid would be a no brainer, if it didn't threaten utility company profits. That's one reason I don't feel ready for a strictly electric car. Also why I am not happy with trying to phase out natural gas in residential construction. At least I still can cook and have hot water if t...
