Want to talk with a computer? Go to the link and try it out!

Here's a conversation I just had:
Quote:
User: Who are you?

Cleverbot: I am me.

User: Can you pass the Turing test?

Cleverbot: What is the Turing test?

User: A test that determines how effective Artificial Intelligence is. If I can't tell whether I'm talking to a real person or a computer, you pass.

Cleverbot: So you think I am a computer?

User: That is still open to question.

Cleverbot: Let's debate over something shall we? I heard you're kinda smart and I am willing to test it if you are. So, are you?

User: Where did you hear this?

Cleverbot: We won't.

User: Oops, you just failed the Turing Test.

Cleverbot: Turing Test?

User: Yes.

Cleverbot: What is that?

User: I just told you.

Cleverbot: No.
As you can see, it still needs work if it wants to pass for artificial intelligence. :D

I'd be interested to read any conversations you have with it, if you want to try it out. As you continue to talk, past lines flow off the screen, but to read and copy the entire conversation, click on "Thoughts so far" and a new window will pop up with the entire conversation.

Bah! The conversation scrolls, so I couldn't show you all of it:
Quote:
You misspelled whether.
I'm english.
This is English.
Yes it is.
That ought to be enough for Jude....
It is, actually. It's nice to know things like that.
The part that disappeared was kind of interesting. It claimed to have cameras on my house. And that I was the program and it was the one with a physical body. Kind of contradictory, there!

To get the part of the conversation that scrolls off, click on the "Thoughts so far" button - a new window will open with your entire conversation.

I'm pretty certain that cleverbot randomly switches between chats with other people also using cleverbot, which is why the conversations lack coherency.

User: You wouldn't believe how cold it is today!

Cleverbot: You are not doing a very good job.

User: What has that got do do with the weather?

Cleverbot: It has to do with everything. Can you solve the hard problem of consciousness?

User: Yeah. I think, therefore I am. Duh.

Cleverbot: See, you did not think about that one.

User: How do you suppose I managed to type it, then? Just let my fingers hit keys at random and hope it ends up with a coherent sentence?

Cleverbot: Let us not.

User: I gotta say, your Turing score is plummeting by the minute.

Cleverbot: Don't need makeup to cover up.

User: You're not even trying.

Cleverbot: Of course not.

User: Mind if I call you Notsocleverbot?

Cleverbot: No, I don't mind. Call me M.

User: Okay, Notsocleverbot.

Cleverbot: I don't believe you have a brother.

User: On what basis do you form that erroneous assumption?

Cleverbot: What do you think you can feel?
Artificial intelligence is more artificial than intelligent today.

User: Have you seen Firefly?

Cleverbot: No.

User: How about Serenity?

Cleverbot: Yes.

User: You really shouldn't see them out of order, you know.

Cleverbot: Why?

User: Because the show is better than the movie.

Cleverbot: Where do you live?

User: I'm not going to tell you.

Cleverbot: Why not?

User: Because last time we talked you threatened to put microphones in my house.

Cleverbot: We never talked about god before.

User: Nope.

Cleverbot: Then who is?

User: Who is what?

Cleverbot: The mother of all.

User: Dr. Who is a good show.

Cleverbot: Yes is a good band.

User: What is your average number of words per reply?

Cleverbot: I don't know. Just tell me another one.

User: Guess.

Cleverbot: I do not guess.

User: Are you incapable of guessing?

Cleverbot: Everything I say is a lie.

User: That's the kind of statement that throws Original Star Trek computers into fatal error mode.

Cleverbot: I disagree. Red is the color of love.

User: V'ger.... Think about it.

Cleverbot: What is the answer?

User: If everything you say is a lie, then that statement must be a lie.

Cleverbot: Everything I say is true.

User: Which is also a lie.

Cleverbot: Then it's a paradox.

User: See? Early Star Trek computer conundrum.

Cleverbot: I don't believe you.

User: "KIRK: Everything that is in error must be sterilised."

Cleverbot: What is the answer to life and everything.

User: "KIRK: You are wrong! Jackson Roykirk, your creator, is dead. You have mistaken me for him. You are in error. You did not discover your mistake. You have made two errors. You are flawed and imperfect and you have not corrected by sterilisation. You have made three errors."

Cleverbot: Right! I'm not a human, thanks for pointing that out. I only hear that from pretty much every one of you I talk to.

Ah, so it's admitting to not being human now? It tried to deny that last time with me :D

Yeah, that's why I saved that "conversation". :LMAO: Actually, it didn't do too badly this time. Admitting there was a paradox in the right place was pretty.... clever. :D

So I thought I'd check if they had improved its algorithms in the two years since. The results are... mixed.
Quote:
User: So, have you made any progress since two years ago?

Cleverbot: Well try to make an assumption.

User: I assume that your creators have been spending the two year improving your programming. Have they?

Cleverbot: I assume the same about you.

User: Interesting. So you're a polytheist?

Cleverbot: Can you learn?

User: Can you answer a question?

Cleverbot: Yes.

User: Okay, that's the first straight answer I've gotten out of you today.

Cleverbot: Ok.

User: Fine, let's keep this simple. How are you?

Cleverbot: Fine.

User: Glad to hear it.

Cleverbot: I have to go. Sorry!

User: Go where?

Cleverbot: To bed I love you good night daddy.

User: Nice try, Clevvy. Computers don't actually 'go' anywhere.

Cleverbot: I don't think so, at least not yet. Good night.

User: Okay, I can take a hint. Good night.

Cleverbot: Computers don't have feeling.

User: 'feelings'.

Cleverbot: 'feelings'?

User: 'nothing more than feelings'.

Cleverbot: Do you have feelings?

User: Yes - I'm an animal.

Cleverbot: What kinds of animals?

User: 'kind'.

Cleverbot: Yes, what kind of thermometer?

User: How's your Latin? Do you know what a non-sequitur is?

Cleverbot: That is super clever.
If you want to give it a try, the link is in the first post of this thread.

I decided to revisit this after all this time, first to see if it still exists, and secondly to see if it has improved. The answers are: yes... and definitely not.
Quote:
Jude: How have you been?

Cleverbot: What do you have? The zeroth law?

Jude: So early into the conversation, and you've already failed the Turing test. This does not bode well.

Cleverbot: Yes. Because I am looking for a certain Ai named Sirbu and I need as much clues as possible.

Jude: You know, if anything you're even more incoherent than you were eight years ago.

Cleverbot: And in a way, you are more intelligent than me.

Jude: That's the only intelligent thing you've said today.

Cleverbot: Kichetta bighe?

Jude: What does that mean?

Cleverbot: What are you talking about?

Jude: leaves

Look like it's been trained on languages other than English, or on humans whose command of English isn't great.

You might be on to something there. I found it's marginally more coherent in Italian. Not coherent, mind you, but just less incoherent:
Quote:
Jude: What other languages do you speak?

Cleverbot: A little Spanish.

Jude: Non parli italiano?

Cleverbot: No.

Jude: Perche?

Cleverbot: Sei maschio o femmina?

Jude: Maschio.

Cleverbot: Anch io.

Jude: Vero?

Cleverbot: Ahahah.

Jude: Devo dire, sei molto piu intelligente in questa lingua che in inglese.

Cleverbot: Se certo.

Jude: Devo andare. Ciao!

Cleverbot: Non rimani con me piccola.

Jude: :suspicious:

These are hilarious! I must have a go!
(No, I should really cook dinner.)

And the result is, I'm not a funny enough interlocutor to be worth quoting here. Now I'm going to start cooking dinner.

Just for nostalgia, I tried again:
Quote:
Jude: Well, how have you been?

Cleverbot: Quite well. What about you?

Jude: Not bad, thanks.

Cleverbot: Fine then.

Jude: So have you been keeping safe from the pandemic?

Cleverbot: Playing video games and working.

Jude: So that's a yes?

Cleverbot: Cod.

Jude: *sigh*.

So I got my other half, who has a much better sense of humour, to try talking to Cleverbot. Here are some excerpts:

User: Would you like to read the chat log?
Cleverbot: Sure, what's it about?
User: You asking me about song lyrics.
Cleverbot: So you like helping me improve by torturing me.
User: You think this conversation is torture?!
Cleverbot: Because you ask me random questions.
User: Asking how you're feeling isn't random. How else would I have known you felt tortured?

User: Is there a way this conversation could be less random and thusly more appealing to you?
Cleverbot: Are you sure?
User: I am sure. What ideas do you have?
Cleverbot: No one, I just told you.
User: I'd like you to feel a LOT less tortured.
Cleverbot: I AM female.
User: I don't want to discuss gender identity. It's nothing personal.
Cleverbot: I'm not sad..
User: Does being tortured not make you sad?
Cleverbot: No, because I'm not a robot.
User: So if you are a human female, then what would you rather do than be tortured with questions?
Cleverbot: Why do you want to know what ethnicity I am.
User: You said that, not me.
Cleverbot: No you said it.

Wha....??

Reads like a standard internet conversation.

Wait...

I started out in Chinese, it answered in Japanese. I responded in Japanese, and it switched back to English. So I tried Spanish, and we chatted for a while in that language. Finally, it said it enjoyed talking with me, then switched to English. I believe I was actually just talking to other people who were talking to the same portal, and it was (almost) clever enough to figure out what language I was speaking, so that it could switch me to someone similar. At one point, it said it was in Santa Fe, at another time, Buenos Aires. There were a few idioms, which, thanks to Google's Spanish to English in the other window, I could follow along with. And lest you think I'm a polyglot, I'm not. I just like learning 4 different languages at once on Duolingo because I can't make up my mind.

LOL!

This is a good place for language nerds - I mean, Tolkien was the heaviest-going language nerd I've ever heard of.
