User: Oops, you just failed the Turing Test.

User: Yes.

Cleverbot: What is that?

User: I just told you.

Cleverbot: No.

As you can see, it still needs work if it wants to pass for artificial intelligence.

I'd be interested to read any conversations you have with it, if you want to try it out. As you continue to talk, past lines flow off the screen, but to read and copy the entire conversation, click on "Thoughts so far" and a new window will pop up with the entire conversation.

The part that disappeared was kind of interesting. It claimed to have cameras on my house. And that I was the program and it was the one with a physical body. Kind of contradictory, there!

I'm pretty certain that cleverbot randomly switches between chats with other people also using cleverbot, which is why the conversations lack coherency.

Yeah, that's why I saved that "conversation". Actually, it didn't do too badly this time. Admitting there was a paradox in the right place was pretty.... clever.

So I thought I'd check if they had improved its algorithms in the two years since. The results are... mixed.

I decided to revisit this after all this time, first to see if it still exists, and secondly to see if it has improved. The answers are: yes... and definitely not.

Look like it's been trained on languages other than English, or on humans whose command of English isn't great.

You might be on to something there. I found it's marginally more coherent in Italian. Not coherent, mind you, but just less incoherent:

Reads like a standard internet conversation.

Wait...

I know, right, Frelga?

I started out in Chinese, it answered in Japanese. I responded in Japanese, and it switched back to English. So I tried Spanish, and we chatted for a while in that language. Finally, it said it enjoyed talking with me, then switched to English. I believe I was actually just talking to other people who were talking to the same portal, and it was (almost) clever enough to figure out what language I was speaking, so that it could switch me to someone similar. At one point, it said it was in Santa Fe, at another time, Buenos Aires. There were a few idioms, which, thanks to Google's Spanish to English in the other window, I could follow along with. And lest you think I'm a polyglot, I'm not. I just like learning 4 different languages at once on Duolingo because I can't make up my mind.

This is a good place for language nerds - I mean, Tolkien was the heaviest-going language nerd I've ever heard of.
