Jude: I haven't seen any yet. I know they're around because I hear them when I go out walking; it's just a matter of convincing them there's good food here.

A group of crows is called a murder of crows.

I don't know why.

The Day without the Sunrise was in August, so end of July - early August. I think Southern California started earlier.

Hmm, we've got a thunderstorm and tornado watch now.

Well, nothing much happened here, but there was a lot of damage in Belleville (about an hour outside of Toronto). They're investigating whether they actually had a tornado or not.

Yikes!

The humidity dropped today, so, even though it's still hot (88F), it is bearable!

Tomorrow is supposed to be lovely, and I'm going fishing with my dad in the morning.

Sounds fun! On a boat? What are you fishing for?

I am taking a long weekend and we are heading down the coast for a different patch of redwoods.

One advantage of the storms is that it brought cooler weather along with them.

I actually had to wear a jacket today :Q

It was chilly this morning and absolutely lovely now! I am loving it!

We fished at a large pond. Mostly we drowned worms and fed the pond critters. Lol! We each caught one bluegill apiece. Turtles ate many of our worms, and I sort of caught one at one point, though I'm glad it got away. (I would feel bad about hooking a turtle. I feel bad enough about the fish and worms!)[ img ]

Do bluegill make good eating? I've never heard of them.

I've only ever fished for gobies in the Black Sea. They barely need bait, silly greedy things. Real good fried.

Also fished on a little river with a friend, some variety of roach (not the insect, the fish that the Witcher names his horse after). We brought lines, hooks, and sinkers, made floats out of corks and broke off some sticks for rods. I think we were more astonished than the fish when we got some. We salted it and dried it in the sun. Good times.

That does sound like a good time!

You could eat a bluegill if you really wanted to, but I'd say you probably would not unless you were truly hungry. And then you'd need a few to make a meal.

It's really chilly this morning. In fact, if this were the autumn, I'd be thinking about turning the heat back on.

But since it's June, I'll just tough it out for a few days because we all know it'll be too hot pretty soon.

End of June - early July used to be our second coldest time of year.

We hit 98F today.

One day of this is manageable even without the AC. The house gets cool at night and takes all morning to heat up. But if this weather hangs around and the house doesn't cool off, I'll be in trouble.

I got a little worried about yesterday's forecast for Saturday. 106F/ 41C

Today's says Saturday will only be 102F/ 38.9C. I feel somewhat relieved, in a still worried way. Anything that hot stresses our livestock.

Even 38.9 is really hot! I hope your livestock is okay!

They've got dense shade they can be in the heat of the day, so they'll live.
There's really nothing else I can do for them, other than make sure they have access to the coolest, shadiest part of the woods that we own.

I see that it was exactly a week ago that I posted gleefully about how cool it was. Well, that didn't last.

Can I last five more days without putting the AC on? It's gonna be tense...

Why does it have to be 5 days?

We are back to normal-ish. Still about 10F warmer than the old normal, but the fog does roll in before sunset and hangs around until late morning. We call it our air conditioning.

Central California had a huge storm with thunder and even heavy rain some places.

Meanwhile, Nor Cal fires are picking up. The other day, the quaint* little town of Port Costa was under evacuation warning. It got lifted before it caught fire, but as there's only one narrow road out of town, I hope people didn't wait. All 242 of them.

* Quaint as in
Wikipedia wrote:
The town is unincorporated and has no official town government. There have however been unofficial “mayors.” The only official capacity of the title is to lead the Port Costa 4 July parade. Candidates have included dogs, toddlers, children and musicians. Elections are held whenever the mood strikes. There are no voting regulations and the whimsy of the event has become a fun tradition.
It's got a very good ice cream shop, and whimsical stores that are probably trading in something else out back, because how else can a shop survive on playing cards and top hats?

I want to do without it until July. Almost there!

I was thinking - does California ever pre-emptively use those special water planes to dampen the forests, or do they wait until there's an actual fire to put out?
