Not that I know. To start with, we don't have that much water.

More likely is burning firebreaks. But there would be air-dropped water for an actual fire. There's a helicopter named Elvis which is shared between Australia and America for fire season in each. Well, I'm not sure if Elvis is still doing it - maybe newer ones have come in. Not sure.

Don't they use those orange chemicals? But yeah, you got to use water one way or the other.

There's a big debate about prescribed burns. Some California ecosystems rely on fires, and the longer you suppress them, the worse it gets. On the other hand, fire departments get lauded and rewarded for fighting fires, but a controlled burn creates smoke and could get out of control.

There are fire roads and fire breaks, but the other year a fire jumped the Carquinez Strait, which is about half a mile wide.

Technically, salting the earth *would* put a stop to the fire problem

Dave :D

A slightly less drastic approach is to deploy a herd of goat or sheep to clear the underbrush. We hiked past an electric fence last week, but the goats weren't there.

The AC is on. Fog is pouring in from the ocean through the Golden Gate. If you zoom, you can see the top of the bridge tower sticking out.

It's pretty surreal reading about all these heatwaves when this is the kind of summer I've been having

That's springtime weather for here.
I'm starting to consider highs around 95 F / 35 C to be mild days this summer. :help:

And even stranger: It's the middle of August, and it's rainy and cool like fall.
The rest of the month is forecast to be no higher than 87F / 30.5 C. August usually ties with July as far as hot weather goes around here. This is a strange but welcome change from the drought in June and July.

We got some rain today. Not precipitation from the fog, but an honest to goodness rain, in big fat drops. It was only a few short spurts, but anything that makes us less of a tinderbox is welcome.

Rain in August is extremely rare here, even when we are not in a drought.

Our heatwave finally broke on Tuesday and we had more rain yesterday...just in the nick of time!

The weather has been beautiful here, and we've even had some rain. I'm appreciating it.

Meanwhile, we are getting the first real heat wave, approaching 110F (43C) inland. The coast will stay below 90, which is still much hotter than usual.

I'm enjoying a dark and stormy Saturday morning by drinking tea and just doing nothing in particular (yet).

Anyone outside of Canada following the news of Storm Fiona?

I don't envy the people on the east coast. It seems that every year there's an unprecedented once-in-a-lifetime weather event.

I think I got confused on my hurricanes/tropical storms, so your post surprised me. I knew Florida is bracing for a hurricane. They are talking about canceling the big AABB (huge blood bank organization) conference which is the talk of my blood bank groups. (It's in Orlando so who knows?)

Anyway, I didn't realize you had a tropical storm. Yikes!
