The only planting in my back yard this year has been done by squirrels. I need to figure out what some of it is.

I've been putting out corn on the cob for the squirrels, chipmunks, bigger birds and rabbits (and a duck!). I haven't noticed, but Jenn said there are corn plants growing in various places. I think this is a great way to gain some more privacy in my backyard without having to ask to or pay to put up privacy shields.

The squirrels in my neighbourhood plant blessed peanuts...everywhere, including the hanging baskets! :rage:

You know what they say - when life gives you peanuts, make peanut butter.

I think the actual saying is, when squirrels give you peanuts.

Ha! Yeah, they do grow but I always pull them up, once I notice...

Only one more day until the glorious 25th of May, and my lilac bush hasn't bloomed yet. Whatever shall I wear?

See how they rise up, rise up...

The flower stall at the farmers market had lilacs last week, but they were asking $30 for a rather sad bunch. Lilacs don't do well here.

The idea of paying $30 for lilac bunch is a strange idea here, since they grow wild around the city.

It reminds me of when I was chatting with someone in Olympia, Greece, where lime trees grow everywhere. He was astonished when I told him how much they cost to buy in the shops in Canada.

If I can keep the aphids at bay, I'll have a bumper crop of blackcurrants this year. My little plant has finally grown up!

* checks ticket prices *

I am getting a handful of raspberries right every day right now. And we finally planted tomatoes. I'd feel bad about being late m, but it's been a cool spring, and I don't think I've lost that much time. Plus, we got more mature plants than we normally get.

I also grabbed chocolate mint and Thai basil.

Still no aphid infestation. Did I permanently eradicate them last year?

So the work may start on my back garden as early as this week. So I may be able to plant stuff in early August.

Question: assuming I can still find them for sale in August, should I plant blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry bushes in August or wait until next spring?

Ooh! Maybe the companion planting really did work??

A quick Google tells me that the soft fruits you mentioned are best planted in the Autumn through to next Spring so you should be able to find them in the shops then, I would have thought...

I don't think it was the companion planting - the lavender didn't survive very long, it just couldn't get enough sun under the thick blackcurrant bush. I think it was all the spraying with soapy water, and also coating the base of the plant with Vaseline. I keep checking and periodically spraying, but I don't see the huge aphid infestation that I did last year.

Good to hear about the autumn planting! I'll get right on that as soon as the area is ready.

Jude, was it just regular soap? Or a special one? (I think I asked that before...)

I have aphids on roses. Vaseline is worth trying.

I used my regular washing-up liquid, mixed with water. I wasn't exact with the measurements, just squirted some into the spray bottle and filled it with water, and sprayed and repeated. During the peak of last season I was spraying every day and there were always aphids on the leaves - until there weren't.

Just keep doing it.

Seems like perseverance paid off in the end! Enjoy those blackcurrents!

So far I've gotten 3 1/2 jars of blackcurrant jam from my plant. And it looks like it's not even finished producing.

I've only seen blackberries sold in the shops in quantities of 1 cup, at $6 per cup. To make vison's Blackberry Jam, I'd have to spend $36. I may have to forego this year unless I see more reasonable prices. Then again, once my back garden is done and my blackberry bush becomes established, I may never have to buy blackberries again. Bliss!

Speaking of which, on Thursday the contractors told me they were about half-way done.
