Baffling. What's the new mandated temperature? Is it too cold?
It sounds like it's just a blanket "5F lower than it was before" for every building. I don't know exactly what thermostat settings they use, but for the office buildings, I expect it will translate to something in the 63-67 range. Whether that's too cold or not is a personal preference, I guess (this just happened so things haven't had time to cool down yet).

I'd be so incredibly pissed at those temps. For sure, I'd be sneaking in a space heater.

It's negative -12F /-24.4C here, right now with wind chills near -30F/-34C. That breaks the local record for low temp on this date.

I was thinking of you just last night, while I was watching bits and pieces of the football game. Brrr.

It's 7F/-14C here, feels like -8F/-22C.

There was another seiche in Lake Erie, too. The winds have been ferocious and sustained.

Now it's 5F/-15C and feels like -13F/-25C. That was just in, what, an hour or so?

(My mind always gets a little blown when the temps reach the range of my blood bank freezers. Well, -15C is too warm, but -25C is just right.)

I'm just sad I have to go to the grocery store, feed my birds, start Jenn's car for a bit, and wrestle off the covering on it because it's totally pointless in this wind. To make myself feel better, I'm going to drive her new car to the store.

You should see how we have to bundle up for outdoor chores. Staying outside in that weather for 30 to 45 minutes or so requires many layers.

I remember eyelashes freezing because cold wind makes eyes water.

But I won't tell you about my weather today.=:)

As long as the power stays on, I don't really mind weather like this. It's the endless cold gray drizzle of sprinter that gets to me.

Me after feeding cows yesterday:

It was 0F/ -17.8C and the tractor wouldn't start. (The diesel is probably gelled) We ended up rolling the round bale into the pen using metal posts as levers. On the last few rotations we pulled off the netting and the bale started laying out on the ground in a line. The cows seem to really like it spread out like that, but it's too hard to do every day. That's why my face is flushed like that. Just finished major exertion. Also happy to have the cows fed. Can't have them hungry on a night -4F degrees!

ETA- And just so you know- those bales flatten out on the down side and are not perfectly round. Every full rotation the darn things come to a complete stop with the flat side against the ground and we had to get the bale moving again. That's what was so hard about it. At least these are smaller round bales and only weigh about 1000 pounds. We couldn't have moved bigger ones.

Yes, if I don't have to go anywhere and the heater is working, it's not awful. But I always have somewhere to go.

Maria, good old Carhart, right? [ img ] (That's a lot of work!)

Not sure this will be readable, but it made me chuckle.[ img ]

"Because I'm frozen to the ground."

Finally, someone gives me a reason for why people stay up north that I can understand! :D

Lali,
The dark brown insulated overalls are a different brand. The matching jacket didn't last long, so I went back with Carhartt's for the replacement. I haven't had a reason to replace the overalls yet. The cows don't care. :P

Insulated boots, overalls, jacket, gloves... everything is thick enough that I stay pretty warm outside. The only problem is that if I cover my nose and breathe out, then my glasses fog over and I can't see. So it's a complicated thing- breath in through covered mouth, breath out through uncovered nose. That way my nose doesn't freeze by taking in super cooled air, and my glasses stay clear.

And living in a cold climate means NO ALLIGATORS! I prefer harsh climate to prehistoric monsters that can eat pets and children.

California doesn't have alligators. Only an occasional mountain lion.

California has other issues. When we visited northern California a while back (a decade, now, maybe?) I was appalled to see tsunami warning signs all over the coastal areas we visited. I was a bit freaked out by that. Yes, the ocean can rise up here and wipe you and everything you see off the map. So be careful!

Of course, there's always the chance that the earth will shake and knock everything down there, too.

I prefer being in the middle of the continent where things like that won't likely happen. If the Yellowstone super volcano blows up, we are screwed, but otherwise, we aren't going to get hit by major geological disasters.

Well, other than drought. :bang: :bang:

We had freezing rain overnight, which means we now have a layer of ice over our snow. Exactly not the sort of weather you want to be walking a retired sled dog in. And yet here I am, walking a retired sled dog.
