If I recall my tornado lore correctly, Florida has many tornadoes, but they're mostly of tiny waterspouty variety that don't have much impact.

Florida has some unexpected risks, I'm learning. For example, leprosy.

Wait, what?

5 tips on managing leprosy risk in Florida

Main tip is, don't eat armadillos.

Wait, WHAT?

Yes, there's actually a well known (in the lab world, anyway) connection between armadillos and leprosy. Weird, eh?

Apparently armadillo is the only non-human species that gets leprosy.

So, is leprosy a big thing in Florida?

I haven't had to think about leprosy too much since school and microbiology. We had a special area of the micro lab at the one lab I worked at for all of the Mycobacteria cultures (specialized growing conditions depending on which one you're looking for: UV light to ID, leprae/lepromatosis grown in cell cultures, acid fast stain to ID overall family, etc.). The short answer is that leprosy (Mycobacterium leprae/lepromatosis) isn't a huge deal in the US, especially, but appears to have become endemic to the Southeast, particularly Florida. So if you end up with weird skin stuff and you've been to Florida, let your doctor know. It's not easily transmitted, though, and it can be cured.

The whole Mycobacteriacaea family is one I'd try to avoid if possible. Leprosy, tuberculosis, avium-intracellulare complex (seen in AIDS, cystic fibrosis, e.g.), etc. But at least we can cure these now, so there's that.

Sadly, we are seeing more tuberculosis now. I've seen theories that this is because covid infection does something to encourage this type of bacteria to wake up from dormancy. However, it could be simply because our public health is in shambles.

We've got a tornado watch this afternoon. At least I work in the basement.

We're under a heat warning now. People are advised to stay at home unless they absolutely have to go out.

While Orlando is of course always very hot during this time of year, it's actually fairly rare that we ever hit 100F* even during peak summertime. I just checked and the last time the thermometer hit 100 was in 2015. But we started getting 100° spikes a couple weeks ago and are still getting them. We are forecasted to hit 106° this Saturday which has literally never happened in my entire lifetime. I'm scared to see what July and August are going to look like!

*(That is not counting the "feels like" heat index which goes over 100 all the time.)

And despite those things happening, apparently, on all sides of me, my forecast for the next 7 days is unseasonably cool (high 60s/low 70s). Weird.

Florida has all sorts of dangers!
‘We’re not gonna barbecue our way out of this’: Wild pigs, conquering all Florida counties, are now taking over the U.S.

Texas replied with "challenge accepted".

But I think high heat with high humidity is more of an immediate concern.

They even quote Florida man, rather uncharitably:
Quote:
“I’m on my hands and knees, praying to God,” he told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “I didn’t have a pocket knife or nothing to protect myself.”

Eventually, after what felt like several hours, the hogs wandered off and Greene made it home alive, though as he walked, he couldn’t be too sure they weren’t just waiting in the trees for the right moment to pounce.

“I know when they kill you, they’ll eat you while you’re screaming,” he said. “I’d rather get eaten by an alligator.”

Hypothetical question: how many wild pigs could a hippopotamos take on?
