It's supposed to switch literally any minute now. It's been rainy and misty and about 45F. It will switch to snow with accumulations of about 6 inches. Then tomorrow we'll have 50mph winds with temps around 1F.

Correction. It's currently -9F/-23. That's about the temp of my blood bank freezers! Lol. The windchill makes it feel like -31F/-35C. (Oooh, we're near that point where the two systems converge!)

The wind is ferocious. There's just something about that that I do not like. It makes me feel very unsettled.

We did get a fair amount of snow, but it's hard to tell how much because it has drifted so badly.

Dave, did you get anything? Jude? Maria?

We got a lot of snow that turned to rain overnight because the temperature rose. It's supposed to fall rapidly throughout the day resulting in flash freezing. So Environment Canada is pleading with everyone to stay home and cancel their travel plans. We're just waiting to see what we'll do - we had to cancel our family get-together last year because the Covid levels were spiking. I bet a lot of people are going to be ignoring the travel advice this year.

There's snow and wind and cold, but none of that is particularly remarkable here, though it's perhaps a few weeks earlier than you'd usually expect the first big blizzard. I think what's exceptional must be the amount of geography affected at the same time, and the fact that it's happening right before Christmas.

Eek, I didn't think about how the storm will affect a lot of travel plans.

I just had to walk for 3 minutes in 40F weather and that was already too much for me so those numbers Lali posted make my brain go wobbly to think about. :uhoh:

And the snow continues to fall and accumulate...

I found two dead mourning doves today, literally frozen to the ground.

It has warmed up though to 10F/-18C that only feels like -8F/-22C.

According to this, it seems that the U.S. was hit ever worse than Canada:

We only got a little snow, maybe half an inch? The wind chills on Thursday and Friday were horrendous, though: -8F/ -22C with windchills of -35F/ -37C It made taking care of our livestock rather challenging. They all lived, though, so I call it a win.

I really don't see how birds of any sort can live through such low temps, though. They have so little body mass!

We only had a couple days of rain and there are floods and mudslides everywhere. The main highway to the airport is flooded, although the alternative is not too bad.

We are OK, the creek a few blocks of our house has never been trouble, although the people whose houses straddle the creek may be feeling nervous.

And the worst part is that it won't make much difference to the drought.

Spoke too soon. My garage flooded. We've lived here for 25 years and that has never happened.

We are having such a mild, sunny morning. Hard to believe that we are going into two weeks of storms tomorrow. With a Schrodinger's break on Friday - the forecast switches between rain and no rain every time I look.

We were at 63F today. That's nuts for this time of year.

It’s bizarrely warm and sunny here too; enough that you only need one dog[ img ]
