Speaking of long, transformative journeys… the Tolkien geeks who know me on FB now tend to call me Jen, and I don’t like it. I like being Estel/Stella/Stellie and chose it for the very reason that I didn’t want to be Jen anymore.

Jen was a girl stuck in an abusive relationship.

Estel is the woman who, with the help of a bunch of Tolkien geeks, got the hell out of that relationship. I’ve been Stella for almost 20 years now.

Is it possible to change the name of your Facebook account?

I’d have to talk to my family about it as I think my parents would be quite hurt. Maybe I could just add it as a middle name.

Plus, when I first joined FB back in the day, I deliberately did NOT use Estel as the abusive ex was still stalking me and knew I had been on Tolkien messageboards. I didn’t want him to put two and two together and be able to identify me on said messageboards.

Now, well, TORC is pretty much gone and this board sees so little action, it would be pretty simple to identify a random stranger showing up… Not to mention, if the dickhead is still stalking me when the last time he saw me was in May of 2003, then that’s just sad and pathetic.

Maybe I will talk to my parents about it and add Estel on my FB name. Then all the pre-2003 people I know will still recognize me, but I can go by my preferred name with all my post-2003 people

Leafy was Alassea or something like that on TORC. Same root word. Since we hung out a lot, both online and in RL, and the only other person using “Estel” at that point in time never ever posted, shortening my name to just Estel sort of naturally happened.
