Oh, that's cool! What do you prefer? A surprise or a choice? My husband asked me, and then we picked out a ring the next day. :)

I don't have any suggestions on bachelorette parties.
We didn't do one when I was married. My husband and his brothers just went bowling when they did the bachelor party, if I recall correctly.

Anything you'd enjoy doing with friends is what you ought to do!

Exciting! :Wooper:

I think giving him some input on what you'd like for an engagement ring is a wise idea. I mean, you wouldn't want to hate something he picks out. If you don't want to pick it out completely, you could just start looking and pointing out what you like, what you love, and what you hate.

Freddy surprised me with the exact ring I said I loved. I didn't think he had enough money to get it, but he ended up getting it together somehow. (Just so you know, it wasn't an expensive ring at all. IIRC, it was about $300, maybe $400. We just didn't have any money back then! I adore my engagement ring though--it's a square cut emerald flanked with a sideways triangle of 3 diamonds on each side.)

As for bachelorette parties, I think your idea sounds grand! :thumbsup I didn't have one; they weren't in vogue then. I did have a party for my bridesmaids. It was a Victorian tea. :)

Thanks, Maria and Lali. I already know what type of ring I would want, but what like it to be a surprise. After all, it is a gift from him to me. :D In this case, I would definitely want him to choose. I did show him what kinf of rings I like and he knows which of my old rings that I never wear fots best, in case he wants to take it to be measured properly. ;) I prefer a solitaire, either round or square, fairly small and on a thin silver band. It's such a classic that I think he can't really go wrong. :)

Actually, he is very worried about picking the wrong one. He said, "You won't like it, I know what you're like. And then you'll take it back to the shop to exchange it and you wouldn't even wear it out of politeness." :Q If we were talking about clothes, it would be true" But an engagement ring is a different matter. It's not all about what I want, in my opinion. :D

Thanks, Eru. I should probably change the title to reflect what's going on. :D

Judging from something Mark said last time, I have the feeling he doesn't plan to wait as long with the proposal as I thought. :Q Interesting. And scary. Well, I sent him pics of the rings I would like so he knows what to avoid too.

So, are you happy with being asked sooner than you expected?

Don't forget to heat the ring up and examine it for writing afterwards before you put it on. You never know what you might be getting into.

:uhoh: Good idea, Jude.

Actually, Mark said he wants a wedding ring like the One Ring whose engravings are only visible when put in the fire. :P Oh dear. He may turn into Sauron one day.

I am not sure if I am happier to be asked sooner or later, actually. It's scary either way and I am happy either way. :D

Silwen (after examining the markings on the ring): Where did you say you got this again?

Mark: Won it in a riddle contest. Why?

Silwen: Oh, no reason.

*thoughtful pause*

Silwen: Um, I have to go out. For about a year or so.

Mark: Okay. I should have my Dr. Who treatise completed by then.

Silwen: And... I'll be bringing eight friends with me.

Mark: Just make sure you come back with all your fingers!

Silwen: Ha ha.

Rings are expensive and engagement rings are meaningful. He wants it to be something that makes you 100% happy. Take it as a good sign for things to come.

S picked out mine behind my back, but he put a lot of thought into it and came up with something I think is awesome. The thing is though, in the US, they say engagement rings are supposed to be 3 months of salary or some ridiculous thing like that. Mine undershot that by a lot (the diamond is teeny and set flush with the band). So he had sales people telling him I would think he didn't love me enough (you have no idea how much I pity women who would think that way) and then, on another occasion, after listing off what he was looking for a sales person asked him, "You're an engineer, aren't you?" :damnfunny:

In other words give ME a quarter of your year's salary that you could have spent on each other to show how much you love her.

Sil, now you will start examining the fellow whenever he gets bloodshot eyes.

I have no engagement ring at all and never had one really, not the first time around either. It's not really common here - almost nobody I know has an engagement ring... often, in Germany, you wear your wedding ring already for the engagement, but at the left hand and then you switch hands when you get married.

Oh, and ich freu mich für dich!

Interesting, Nin.

Like I said, my engagement ring was unusual in that is was an emerald. I like diamonds, but there are other gems I find prettier. Emeralds are my favorite. (Besides, the ring has 6 small diamonds on it. :D)

I'm excited for you, Silwen. :toast: Keep us updated, please!

My engagement ring is a ruby. :) Since my fella was selling plasma at the time to stay in school, I guess the rather inexpensive ring did constitute several month's salary for him! :LMAO:

However, my parents gave us the money to get the ring.

It's kind of too bad I can't stand metal jewelry any more. The ring is kinda pretty and I'd sort of like to wear it again.

I did consider a stone other than a diamond, but I would really love to have a diamond for once in my life and due to its simplicity (i.e. neutral colouring) I am bound to like it forever. I can always ask for a ring with a different stone for some special anniversary. :D

Nin, I did wonder what it is like here in the UK because I remembered from Germany that there was something about wearing engagement and wedding rings on different hands. I think I will just wear it where it feels comfortable (and I definitely want an engagement ring  ).

River, Mark wouldn't be happy if there was a rule like the ring needing to cost 3 months' wages. :LMAO: I told him the price of a particular ring and he said, "That's a whole month's wage!" Guess that's out of the question then. :blackeye:

This is the ring I would really love to have - I told Mark so he knows. =:)

Ooooh! It's pretty! :)

Maria, I'll bet the ring is pretty. (Speaking of not being able to wear metal jewelry, I'm having a heck of a time with one of my ears. :( I'm hoping it's just an infection, but I can't seem to clear it up. So, whenever I put my earrings in, my ear immediately gets very hot and starts burning.)

Silwen, the ring you like is almost exactly like the engagement ring Chris gave me in 1965! My ring is yellow gold, not white, but the style is identical, with the stone set in a swirl like that. It's lovely.

A classic can never be wrong and simplicity is best with things you want to keep for a long time, I think. I am glad no one has said it's horrible!

I have always been a fan of Halloween even though I never got to celebrate it. In Germany it isn't that big since it is more of an American thing, but it was slowly entering German culture as well just before I left. This year in the UK I had the chance to go to an actual proper Halloween Ball, in Bath's elegant Pump Room and Roman Baths no less! Of course I jumped at the chance. It went really well, we had fun, I even got Mark to dance for the first time ever, and I still think I had the best comstume of the lot even though I didn't win the prize. :P My friend Verena did the make-up according to pictures I showed her and it lasted till the very end. And this morning I would have preferred to stay in bed altogether. :blackeye:
