About a decade ago I took up origami for a little while. Since then two T-Rexes have stood on my file cabinet at work, assuming various poses of killing each other throughout the years.

This year my coworkers gave me a vase for Christmas, and I put it next to the dinos because the landscape scene in the vase looked like it ought to have dinosaurs roaming in it. :D However, soon the empty vase started to bother me, and I looked up some origami patterns and made some flowers to go in the vase.

I was ridiculously pleased with the flowers, and posted a pic to Facebook, where to my surprise, the dinos got all the attention. My mom asked for an "inevitable betrayal" scene from Firefly, so I found a stegosaurus pattern, managed to figure out the instructions :bang: and was able to post this for her:

with, of course, the "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" caption. :)

I'm still new enough to this that I have to look up how to make all the common bases- but I'm enjoying this for now. This may be the best way of passing the time in a slow office job that I've found yet. Besides roaming the internet, I mean....

Like I said, those are really cool!

I want to comment on Alatar's origami. That almost looks like the star ornaments I was talking about, but those did involve several strips of paper.

I didn't get the stegosaurus exactly right. On step 18 I don't understand what it means to "make the head 3D" and probably because of that I couldn't do step 19 and open out top *something* to make eyes.

It looks like a stegosaurus, though, so I'm happy. It's just a bit frustrating not to understand the instructions.

As a kid I had two of the Robert Harbin Books, "Origami - The Art of Paper Folding" and "More Origami" I think they were called.

Quick Google:

[ img ][ img ]

I must have made the flapping bird hundreds of times, but also did most of the others at least once. Anything that required cutting was considered cheating, and of course we didn't have proper Origami paper so every piece started with a page from a copybook folded diagonally to make a square and the remainder removed by tearing along a ruler edge!

I remember making the water bomb base, which could actually be used as a water bomb. The Skier, the Christmas ornaments, even an inflatable frog.

Like I said in the other post though, the Jackstone was my pinnacle. I only ever managed it once and could never repeat it. It was soooo difficult, even though the end result looked so simple.

I'd really like to do it again. Maybe I'll pick up a book and show my kids the basics.

:Q We had the same books! (Actually, I should say that my brother had the same books.)

And, yes, it always starts with rectangular paper with the extra strip ripped off.

I've done a crane and a few other easy animals. And a cup (that actually does work for a drink or two).

I'm rather famous (among preschoolers and teens) for my bunny, though.

:LMAO:

I have to say, I didn't think of folding the paper first and then cutting off the extra! Here I was using a paper cutter and the measurements on it, trying to get the resulting paper square through measuring. It doesn't work very well, and I was thinking there had to be a better way of achieving square paper!

Your way is much simpler!

Yes, it's a lot easier that way. You could still use the paper cutter to get a clean edge, though.

Here are my origami creations:

:LMAO: Very challenging, as you can see!

During a boring rehearsal last year, the other horn player in the department contemporary music ensemble made an origami grand piano... I think the pianist still has it... If he doesn't, I'll get her to make another one and post it! It was pretty impressive I must say.

I believe I read once that it is impossible to fold a piece of paper more than 7 times, no matter how large a piece you begin with. This is NOT origami, this is when you fold a piece in half, then half again, and so on.

That's my contribution to this thread.

I couldn't do more than 6 on an 8.5 x 11 either. I bet that's why we always had trouble folding huge tarps. You just can't go half and half and half and so on. You have to fold in thirds and quarters and halves and halves in order to get it small enough to store before you run out of foldability.

This is this afternoon's effort. My first attempt at a rose. :)

At first I was pretty disappointed by how ugly it was, then I took the time to touch it up with a sharpie marker where the toner had worn off, and it looks OK now. :)

I printed a 6 inch square on a piece of paper and then cut it out with scissors. This pattern was complicated enough that I wanted one side colored so I could keep up with where everything was. I still had a heck of a time figuring things out and I know the bottom didn't end up as planned.[ img ] A thingy I was supposed to tuck a point into at the end just wasn't there! And by then I certainly wasn't going back to redo everything.

I had the Robert Hardin books as a kid, too! I could only make the simplest things - for the more complicated things, inevitably I would get to a step where I couldn't decipher the illustrated instructions, and had to guess what they meant, and then give up a couple of steps later when my creation was looking less and less than the book illustration.

(In other words, I loved it as a kid but was never terribly good at it :D )

Incidentally, if there are scissors and cutting involved, it's called "kirigami".

The Mythbusters exploded that myth... with a aircraft hanger-sized piece of paper.

I used to do lots of origami with my kids. Now I just fold cranes and frogs out of foil or cellophane candy wrappers, or whatever else is at hand.

You can get pre cut origami paper at most Asian grocery stores. It's better for folding and genuinely square.

:D That's great, laureanna! I love Mythbusters.

I have origami paper. It's nice stuff. You can get it at most arts & crafts stores, too. We don't have too many Asian markets around here.

I found the book I got the T-Rex pattern from last night. It's Animal Origami for the Enthusiast by John Montroll It's probably not really meant for beginners, which is probably why I found everything in it just about too hard for me back then. I like the online instructions I'm finding better, especially the ones with photographs of each step. Much easier to follow than diagrams!

I just noticed at the top of the Amazon page, "You purchased this item on August 29, 2000. View this order." It really was a decade ago for me! :D

And it kinda creeps me out a bit that Amazon keeps detailed records forever. :suspicious:

Creepy but often helpful when I'm trying to remember what I bought for someone else.

I liked your rose, btw. :)

Thanks. :) It's pretty abused, but recognizable. :)

I really want to do this one someday-
http://www.spitenet.com/origami/pdf/Yoda-JediMaster.pdf
But I think I need to master the basics first. :Q

Friends, I simply cannot, cannot, cannot imagine the patience it must take to achieve those figures. I would sooner stab myself in the eye, honestly.

Jeez.

You guys are amazing.
